Bipolar

Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, is a mental health condition that causes extreme mood swings. These highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression) can really mess with sleep, energy, behavior, and our ability to handle everyday tasks. The highs and lows experienced with bipolar can vary in duration, from days to weeks and even months.

Types of Bipolar Disorder

  • Bipolar I Disorder: This involves manic episodes that last at least seven days or are so intense that you might need to go to the hospital. It's usually accompanied by depressive episodes lasting at least two weeks.
  • Bipolar II Disorder: This is characterised by a pattern of depressive episodes and hypomanic episodes, but not the full-blown manic episodes seen in Bipolar I.
  • Cyclothymic Disorder: This includes periods of hypomanic symptoms and periods of depressive symptoms lasting at least two years (one year in children and adolescents) without meeting the criteria for a full hypomanic or depressive episode.

Symptoms to Recognise

  • Manic/Hypomanic Episode: Increased energy, euphoria, decreased need for sleep, feeling overly important, rapid speech, impulsive behavior, and in severe cases, delusions or hallucinations.
  • Depressive Episode: Prolonged sadness or emptiness, fatigue, feelings of hopelessness, loss of interest in activities, changes in appetite or sleep, and thoughts of death or suicide.

Impact on Daily Life

Bipolar disorder can really throw our lives off balance, affecting relationships, job performance, and overall quality of life. During manic phases, we might make reckless decisions, while depressive phases can make us feel unable to function normally.

Treatment and Management

Bipolar disorder is a long-term condition that needs ongoing management. Effective treatments include:

  • Medications: Mood stabilisers, antipsychotic medications, and antidepressants can help manage symptoms.
  • Psychotherapy: Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), family therapy, and psychoeducation can provide support and coping strategies.
  • Lifestyle Changes: Regular exercise, a stable routine, sufficient sleep, and avoiding alcohol and drugs can help stabilise mood swings.
